Remote Work Models in the UAE
Over the past five years, the UAE has adapted its visa offerings to cater to an evolving workforce. As remote work has become a dominant model worldwide, the UAE has recognised the need to attract professionals who can contribute to its economy while working for companies located elsewhere. This approach has made the UAE an increasingly attractive destination for remote workers and digital nomads.
The recognition of remote working models works two ways. There are individuals who want to live & work in the UAE while working for an overseas company but then on the other end, you have UAE based companies also wanting to employ remote workers who are based abroad. With flexibility both ways, the UAE taps into an even broader talent pool.
Recently, the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) has taken significant steps to embrace remote working within its jurisdiction. Effective 1 April 2025, ADGM’s new employment regulations will redefine the relationship between employers and employees, ensuring a more inclusive framework for remote work arrangements.
Key Updates in ADGM Employment Regulations
Under the new regulations announced by the Registration Authority (RA) of ADGM, several key changes will support remote work and flexible arrangements:
- Expanded Definition of "Employee” to include remote and part-time workers
- Companies have time to revise policies, employment contracts, and operational practices before the employment laws come into effect.
- Employers must provide and maintain the necessary technical equipment to ensure productivity and efficiency for remote employees.
These updates aim to promote diverse working styles while clarifying the rights and responsibilities of both employers and employees.
This move aligns ADGM with global best practices but also expands the UAE’s offerings in modern employment models and the ways in which employment is defined.
