Managing Iqama and Visa Validity in Saudi Arabia

27 April 2026 - Amjad Alamri

We’ve recently seen a few cases, particularly with General Managers in Saudi Arabia, where their Iqamas or exit/re-entry visas were either close to expiring or had already expired. In most situations, it wasn’t intentional but it slipped through the cracks. However, the consequences can be much bigger than expected. It may appear to be a small administrative issue but the GM Iqama is central to almost all operational processes in KSA and can have a major impact.

When One Expiry Triggers a Full Reset

For employees who travel often or spend time outside Saudi Arabia, it’s easy to lose track of dates. The issue is that once an Iqama or exit/re-entry visa expires while someone is outside the Kingdom, it’s not always a quick fix.

If the Iqama expires abroad, it may no longer be possible to renew it remotely. And if the exit/re-entry visa lapses, the system can show the employee as having left the country without returning. That can block any extensions or new visas from being issued.

At that point, things can escalate. In some cases, the whole process has to be restarted, from issuing a new block visa to reprocessing entry. The original Iqama may be cancelled, and depending on the situation, there can even be restrictions on re-entering Saudi Arabia for a period of time.

For General Managers, the impact can be even more disruptive. Since their ID is linked across multiple government platforms, an expired Iqama can limit access to key systems and affect day-to-day operations.

How Sovereign can Assist?

This is all avoidable with a bit of forward planning. Regularly checking expiry dates, especially for employees who travel often, and starting renewals 30-60 days in advance can make a big difference. It would be a good idea from companies currently operating in the Kingdom to have and dedicated resources or internal HR function appointed to track these timelines centrally, which will also help to avoid last-minute issues.

It is therefore incredibly important to stay ahead of these requirements than reacting when it’s already too late. A quick check today can save a lot of time and disruption later. As a registered corporate service provider in Saudi Arabia, Sovereign PPG can support by helping your company managing these timelines.
